A project to develop a small and cheap camera device with basic OCR and wireless capabilities to be used for automatic meter reading applications. The device can be easily mounted on various electricity, gas and water meters to be able to periodically take pictures of the meter and read the current value using a lightweight OCR algorithm. The currently read value is transferred to a central gadget using a standard (ZigBee) wireless interface.
Applications:
- Home energy consumption monitoring applications where traditional utility meters are used without built-in AMR capability.
- Industrial applications where traditional meters or gauges should be monitored continuously or the gauges are mounted on hard to reach locations.
A project to develop a web service for optimising digitised documents for reading on portable readers (e-book readers, notebooks). The scanned document pages can be uploaded to the server for optimisation using various image processing algorithms modifying the size, colour depth, contrast of the image to improve overall readibility. The service can be used as a converter between various e-book formats and to merge separate pages to one document.
